How to Get Your Business Recommended by AI Search

Customers are asking ChatGPT and Perplexity for recommendations instead of scrolling results. Here is how to be one of the names that comes back.

A growing share of buyers now ask an AI assistant for recommendations instead of scrolling search results. They type "best dentist near me for nervous patients" into ChatGPT and take the three names it gives them.

If your business isn't among those names, you're invisible to that entire audience — and unlike traditional search, there's no page two to be found on.

Why AI answers differ from search results

A search engine returns a ranked list and lets you choose. An AI assistant reads sources, synthesises them, and gives one answer with a handful of recommendations. That difference matters enormously:

  • There are far fewer slots. Ten blue links becomes three names.
  • Clarity beats keyword volume. The model has to understand your business, not just match a phrase.
  • Being quoted accurately matters. If your pricing or service area is ambiguous, the model may describe you wrongly — or skip you.

What actually makes a business quotable

Answer real questions in plain language

Models favour content that directly answers what someone asked. A page headed "Do you offer emergency appointments?" followed by a straight answer is far more likely to be surfaced than the same information buried in a paragraph about your values.

Make the facts machine-readable

Structured data — the schema markup behind your pages — tells a machine unambiguously what you do, where you operate, what you charge, and what people said about you. Without it, the model is guessing from prose.

Be specific about scope

"We serve clients nationwide" is weak. "We work with dental practices across Greater Manchester and Cheshire" is something a model can match against a specific query.

Let the crawlers in

AI crawlers are separate from Googlebot — GPTBot, PerplexityBot, ClaudeBot and others. Many sites block them by accident through a restrictive robots.txt. It's worth checking, because it's a silent and total exclusion.

The short version: traditional SEO optimises for matching. AI visibility optimises for being understood well enough to be recommended.

Send us your business name and service area. We can check what AI tools recommend for the searches your customers make.

How to check where you stand

This takes about ten minutes and costs nothing:

  • Ask ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google's AI results the question a customer would actually ask. Not your business name — the need.
  • Note who gets recommended, and what the answer says about them.
  • Ask directly about your business. Is what comes back accurate? Wrong details are worse than no mention.
  • Check yoursite.com/robots.txt for rules blocking AI crawlers.

If you're not appearing, the fix is usually content structure rather than more content. If you're appearing but described wrongly, it's almost always missing structured data.

This is exactly what our AI visibility work covers, and it runs alongside conventional SEO rather than replacing it.
